FBI Arrests Friend of Alleged Charleston Church Shooter Dylann Roof

Joseph "Joey" Meek, an alleged friend of accused Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof, was arrested on Thursday.
Although charges were not made clear, the FBI informed Meek over a month ago that he was being investigated for lying and failing to report a crime in connection with the Charleston church shooting, the Associated Press reports.

According to AP, Meek, 21, has said that Roof, who allegedly shot and killed nine churchgoers, told him that "blacks were taking over the world" and "someone needed to do something about it for the white race." Meek also said that Roof stayed with him at a mobile home about 20 miles from Charleston, where the shooting occurred, prior to the incident.
A federal law enforcement official, who spoke anonymously to AP, said that they think Meek lied throughout the FBI's investigation.

In an interview with CNN just days after the shooting, Meek said that he orginally "didn't take [Roof] serious," but alerted the FBI the morning after the shooting when he heard the description of the suspect and recognized Roof's license plate.
Meek's girlfriend, Lindsey Fry, told AP that she last spoke to him on Thursday afternoon when he told her that FBI officials were approaching him at work and wanted to speak, but he was under the impression he was going to jail.

Fry added that she hasn't heard from Meek – who is also on probation for possessing a stolen vehicle, Lexington County court records show – since their phone call and is unsure if he has a lawyer.

Roof has pleaded not guilty to all 33 federal charges against him, including hate crimes, firearms violations and obstructing the practice of religion after determining that the man allegedly targeted his victims on the basis of their race and religion.

He is also charged at the state level with nine counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and one count of possessing a weapon. He is reportedly considering pleading guilty to those charges in order to avoid the death penalty, his attorney said Wednesday.
