Essien Lauds PSG After Chelsea Victory.

Ghana and Panathinaikos midfielder Michael Essien has admitted that despite the support he had for his former club Chelsea over Paris Saint Germain in the Uefa Champions League round of 16 tie, the French giants proved to be worthy winners on Wednesday.

Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat a fortnight ago and needed a victory with two-goal margin to progress to the next stage but two goals from Adrien Rabiot and Zlatan Ibrahimovic which were sandwiched by a Diego Costa's strike gave the visitors another 2-1 victory to sail through on a 4-2 aggregate.

“Though I wanted Chelsea to win against Paris Saint Germain, I have to admit that the visitors put up some great performance [which helped them beat Chelsea],” Essien wrote on Twitter.

“I wish them well in the next stage, well done,” he added.

The victory has seen PSG making it four successive qualifications into the last eight while Chelsea bow out in a similar manner as last year under former coach Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea, now 10th on the Premier League log, are likely to miss out on next season's Champions League with 10 points behind fourth-placed Manchester City with nine matches remaining.
