Police took a three-month-old baby into emergency care from an "intoxicated" babysitter outside a supermarket.
Concerned members of the public called police at around 00:24 GMT after seeing the woman outside Tesco in Pool, Cornwall.
Officers said the woman with the baby was not the mother but was thought to be babysitting the child.
The baby was taken into police protection and passed into the care of social services.
The woman has not been charged with any offence and officers will now work with social services to investigate the matter.
